Home Life for Civilians in the North
Home life in the North was better than home life in the South. The war affected both sides greatly but the since the war was fought mostly on Southern territory, the South suffered more.
In the North, a typical family would have the father at war, women or mothers working in the factories, and boys as young as twelve became the man of the house while their father was at war and their mother at work.
The Union army recruited millions of people and much more than the Confederate army. This caused many families in the North to break apart and left with only mothers and daughters to take care of everything. Families were also divided during the Civil War. Sometimes a father and a son could be fighting against each other if they supported different sides.
The battles and food shortages also affected home life. Homes were destroyed, and food, clothing, and other necessities weren't always available. Women played an important role in society. Since all the men were out at war, women began to take jobs such as a factory worker, clerk, and school teacher. Since many people were sick and wounded from the war, many women became nurses.
